Zero-th law in structural glasses: an example

چکیده

We investigate the validity of a zeroth thermodynamic law for nonequilibrium systems. In order to describe the thermodynamics of the glassy systems, it has been introduced an extra parameter, the effective temperature which generalizes the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) to off-equilibrium systems and supposedly describes thermal fluctuations around the aging state. In particular we analyze two coupled systems of harmonic oscillators with Monte Carlo dynamics. We study in detail two types of dynamics: sequential dynamics, where the coupling between the subsystems comes only from the Hamiltonian; and parallel dynamics where there is another source of coupling: the dynamics. We show how in the first case the effective temperatures of the two interacting subsystems are different asymptotically due to the smallness of the thermal conductivity in the aging regime. This explains why, in structural glasses, different interacting degrees of freedom can stay at different effective temperatures, and never thermalize.

Emergence of Macroscopic Temperatures in Systems That Are Not Thermodynamical Microscopically: towards a Thermodynamical Description of Slow Granular Rheology

A scenario for systems with slow dynamics is characterised by stating that there are several temperatures coexisting in the sample, with a single temperature shared by all observables at each (widely separate) timescale. For spin glasses, this fact alone has recently been shown to fully imply Parisi's construction, while for structural glasses the connection is less relevant. In preparation for...

The Relationship between Structural and Optical Properties of GeO2-PbO Glasses

The structural and optical characterization of bulk GeO2-PbO glasses was the goal of this study. In this regard, six different (100-x)GeO2‌-xPbO (15<x<45) glasses were prepared by conventional melt quenching technique between two steel sheets. The produced samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Vis s...

Structural Investigation, Physical and Optical Properties of Mixed Alkali Bismuth Borate Glasses

Lead free, eco-friendly bismuth borate glasses doped with alkali oxides of composition xLi2O+(30-x)Na2O+55B2O3+15Bi2O3 (x = 5,10,15,20,25) were prepared by melt quenching technique. Amorphous nature of glasses was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Density measurements were carried out at room temperature by standard principle of Archimedes with Xylene as an immersion liquid. The non-linear ...

Probing the glass transition from structural and vibrational properties of zero-temperature glasses.

We find that the density dependence of the glass transition temperature of Lennard-Jones (LJ) and Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) systems can be predicted from properties of the zero-temperature (T=0) glasses. Below a crossover density ρs, LJ and WCA glasses show different structures, leading to different vibrational properties and consequently making LJ glasses more stable with higher glass tran...

Microscale distribution and behavior of Th, REE, and K during regolith formation processes on the Moon: Implications for remote sensing of the surfaces of airless planetary bodies

Introduction: Remotely sensed geochemical data provide extremely valuable information concerning the global distribution of elements on a planetary surface, and are valuable in the identification of major crustal terranes. Planetary geochemical maps of the Moon and Mars for several elements such as Th, rare earth elements (REE), K, and Fe have been or are currently being prepared and have yield...
